900 betting shops set to reap benefits
900 sportsbooks are set to enjoy a massive uptick in business after the Scottish government agreed to lift a number of harsh restrictions placed on retail betting shops in the country, starting July 22.
In a tweet, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) said sportsbooks in Scotland were celebrating the news:
Betting shops north of the English border reopened on June 29 following the COVID-19 lockdown. Unlike in other gambling shops across the UK, however, visitors to Scottish betting establishments could only place their wagers over the counter. Fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) were switched off, showing live racing on TV was forbidden, and all chairs were ordered to be removed.
UK industry body applies pressure
The lifting of COVID-19 restrictions by the Scottish government on retail sportsbooks comes after a campaign conducted by the BGC. As the UK’s sole industry body representing betting shops, online gaming businesses, and casinos, the council had warned that outlets across the country would be forced to close and staff made redundant.

In a July 9 article on the BGC website, Scotbet Falkirk branch manager Andy Bennett said the Scottish government seemed “hellbent on the destruction of an industry that employs thousands and pays millions in tax”. Labeling the restrictions imposed “ludicrous”, Bennet said the decrease in turnover exceeded 60% for his betting shop. Scotbet ranks among the leading sportsbook operators in the country.
The BGC also reported that some Scottish sportsbooks experienced a 95% slump in revenue as customers avoided coming in or crossed the border to gamble in England.
Lifeline for Scottish sportsbooks
BGC chief executive Michael Dugher said the announcement came as “great news” for the country’s betting shops and their 4,500 employees. “We have always said that the extra restrictions imposed on Scottish betting shops were unnecessary. We are delighted that the Scottish Government has listened and responded,” he added.
