Business resumes in Sin City

MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Corporations have announced that they will reopen more properties after a busier-than-expected weekend in Vegas. Following two months of shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, casinos across Vegas are now preparing to accelerate reopening plans.

In a tweet, MGM said its Luxor Hotel & Casino and The Shoppes at Mandalay Place will resume operations on June 25 at 10am PST. These will be followed by the ARIA Resort & Casino’s 10am reopening on July 1. Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino and the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas are set to open their doors at 11am on the same day.

Caesars has revealed that business will resume at The LINQ Las Vegas Strip property on June 12. The LINQ’s gaming floor restarts alongside numerous on-site restaurants and bars on June 12. Popular Harrah’s Las Vegas eateries and drinking spots will also be open on what is anticipated to be a productive Friday for the Caesars corporation.

An electric atmosphere

Sin City’s reactivation began at 12:01am on Thursday, with MGM reporting a strong opening weekend. At Caesars Palace, actors and ‘Mr Las Vegas’ Wayne Newton were on hand to welcome excited visitors. “It was exciting and emotional to see the energy in Las Vegas last week,” said Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts’ Acting CEO and president.

“The energy we felt this weekend was further proof that doing Las Vegas safely is still the same Las Vegas experience guests have come to know and love,” John Flynn, vice president of administration at MGM, added in a statement.

Caesars Entertainment CEO Tony Rodio said the company found customer interest and strong demand highly encouraging.

Rigorous safety measures

While the US is relaxing its coronavirus restrictions, cases still continue to climb, with some states reporting their worst-ever week. Casinos and resorts, however, are serious about implementing safe environments.

The majority of properties and attractions in Las Vegas include hand sanitizer stations. Some casinos, including resorts owned by MGM and Wynn, have installed plexiglass barriers on table games.

Back to work

Nevada’s casino scene revival is being welcomed by visitors, gambling industry workers, and employers alike. “We are eager to get more of our employees back to work and enhance the Las Vegas experience with additional resorts,” said Bill Hornbuckle.

Nevada’s unemployment rate reached record highs during the COVID-19 closures, with some 342,000 people out of a job. The four-mile Vegas Strip is home to the top 100 employers in the state. According to Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, a local official responsible for managing the Strip, the shutdown cost the county government $1.1bn in losses.
